Internet, e-mail monitoring and data protection
Employers hold an enormous amount of data and information about staff, customers, and suppliers. It is therefore essential that all businesses have in place adequate protections to ensure the data which they hold, use and process is used in a way which is compliant with the law.
Modern businesses encourage the use of the internet and e-mail as a research and communication tool. Abuse of either of these leaves the employer open to potential liability. Staff should have easy access to a clear internet/e-mail policy so there can be no doubt about what is and what is not permissible.
Employers also need to be aware of social networking sites, not only for the purposes of their own business but also the potential for use, or abuse, of these by staff.
