This is a tax paid by house buyers according to the price of the property being purchased. The threshold is £125,000 for residential property and £150,000 for commercial property. In 'disadvantaged areas', commercial property is exempt and the residential threshold is £150,000.

First time buyers do not pay stamp duty on homes costing up to £250,000. The scheme, which commenced on 25.03.10, will last for two years.
