Blackadders' backing for foundation golf

Blackadders Backing For Foundation Golf

ENTRIES are flooding in for the second “Blackadders Barrie Douglas Foundation Scottish Junior Masters.”

The tournament will be hosted by Perthshire’s Strathmore Golf Centre from May 31 to June 2.

An added incentive for this year’s top performers has been teed-up by “The Race to the Machrie” hook-up with Foundations established by top Scots golfers Paul Lawrie and Stephen Gallacher to champion junior golf.

The top two boys and the leading girl in the 2019 Barrie Douglas Foundation flagship event will secure invitations to the September 21/22 season finale at the smart Islay hotel and classic links.

“Blackadders are delighted to be involved for a second year with this prestigious event,” said partner Douglas Sneddon.

“The inaugural tournament was very successful and it is a fitting tribute to Barrie, who did so much to encourage young golfers.”

Ryder Cup and European Tour star Gallacher took in the 2018 tournament at Blairgowrie.

“It was a fantastic event and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to stay all three days to watch,” he said.

“There was a really good atmosphere for the players and parents.

“With the tournament now forming part of the ‘Race to The Machrie’ with Paul Lawrie’s and my own Foundation it will be another cracking event.”

Tournament director Spencer Henderson welcomed renewed sponsorship from Blackadders, Carbon Financial and other business backers.

“The inaugural Barrie Douglas Scottish Junior Masters was a fitting tribute to a great man with sponsors, volunteers, parents and players adding to the success of the event.

“It felt like a special “Tour” event for the youngsters taking part.”

David Norman, director of operations at Strathmore, is looking forward to rolling out the welcome mat to 120 boys and girls from across the country.

“We are always keen to promote junior golf and Strathmore is extremely proud to be hosting the Blackadders Barrie Douglas Scottish Junior Masters,” he said.

“We share the same ethos. The Centre has re-developed its nine-hole ‘fun’ Par 3 course, we fund extensive junior tuition with pro Gareth Couzens and junior convenor Iain Butchart, and his team now have around 80 boys and girls enjoying their golf. Our Junior section successes are now numerous at both national and international level.”

The Big County venue is no stranger to holding prestigious events where a string of countries have been represented.

Strathmore hosted the Scottish U16 Girls International Open for six successive years from 2010-2015, and in 2016 hosted the three-day Scottish Girls U18 International Open competition.

Perth and Kinross County Golf and Scottish Seniors events are also on the 2019 calendar.

*The Barrie Douglas Foundation was established in memory of the well-known Perth businessman who died after taking ill in Spain while captaining the Scotland squad at the European Boys Team Championships. He was a long-time administrator with P&K County Golf.
