Stephen Connolly - Employment law partner

Stephen is a Partner in our Employment Team. He has specialised in employment law for over 15 years.

In addition to regularly appearing in the Employment Tribunal on behalf of clients in contentious matters, Stephen provides strategic, practical advice on the full range of employment law and HR topics as will arise throughout the cycle of an employment relationship, including disciplinary and grievance matters, performance management, unfair dismissal, discrimination issues, the Working Time Regulations, TUPE and contractual disputes.

He advises employer clients on obligations under the Data Protection Act 2018 and on business immigration issues and also designs and presents training courses on HR issues for management and senior directors and employees.

He regularly delivers seminars for the business, legal and HR community, including having spoken at the Employment Lawyers Association Scotland Conference and at the CIPD Scotland conference amongst others.

Work Highlights

  • Successfully acting for a chain of restaurants in resisting claims of unfair dismissal, unlawful deduction of wages and age discrimination brought by two former employees which were valued in excess of £35,000.
  • Successfully resisting a claim of maternity discrimination brought against a limited company and one of its directors who was named as an individual Respondent, with several allegations of discrimination and harassment all being dismissed following a hearing.
  • Providing strategic advice to a firm of accountants in ensuring that the business would be protected in the event of any Director leaving by having tailored and properly drafted post termination restrictions in place.
  • Advising an employer client on complicated TUPE issues arising from the outsourcing of a particular function, which also created the obligation to engage in collective consultation and raised the prospect of potential redundancies. Following advice, the client’s objectives were achieved and no claims were raised against the organisation.

External Roles

  • He is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association and is a past member of the ELA Scotland Steering Committee.
