Hazel has a particular interest in renewables and can advise on the options available to farming clients looking to diversify with wind developments.

Hazel is from an agricultural background and is therefore well placed to understand the practical needs of our farming clients.

Biography

Lucy joined Blackadders in October 2016 and works in the Residential Conveyancing team. 

Lucy has previously worked on behalf of major house-builders and has assisted in site acquisitions and the subsequent sales of individual properties for residential use. Lucy regularly acts on behalf of purchasers and in particular, for the purchase of new-build properties. Lucy also deals with sales of residential properties, as well as attending to security work on behalf of clients.

Lucy also has experience in acting on behalf of rural clients and has been involved with transactions involving the first registration in the Land Register of farm land and associated residential properties. Similarly, she has acted on behalf of Trust clients in relation to the acquisition and disposal of large estates.

Gail is a Director in our Rural Land and Business Department and is based in our Edinburgh office. Biography

As a Solicitor within the Private Client team, John has considerable experience of complex Private Client and Succession planning matters. He can offer advice on a broad range of Scots law and his primary areas of practice are Guardianships, Executries, Trusts, Wills and Powers of Attorney.

In particular, John prepares bespoke Wills for clients to ensure their assets are protected and estates are dealt with efficiently and lawfully. He also deals with all aspects of the Executry process and can guide clients and their families through the difficult process of administering estates after death.

John also assists a wide range of clients through the process of obtaining a Guardianship Order for vulnerable or incapacitated relatives. He is passionate in assisting clients who may have family members with very specific needs and who are unable to manage their own affairs. John regularly represents clients in Guardianship hearings in Sheriff Courts across the country.

John can also offer advice to the families of vulnerable individuals on how best to provide for those family members by safeguarding their inheritance on an ongoing basis after the death of a parent or carer. He advises clients in preventing and resolving problems caused by incapacity, whether that be proactively or reactively.

He has a growing interest in Mental Health and Incapacity Law.

Kirsty graduated from Glasgow University in 1975. Jennifer joined the Rural Land and Business team at the start of 2015. She initially joined Blackadders in 2014 as part of our residential conveyancing department having practised in both Aberdeen and Perth since qualifying as a solicitor in 2006 where she has dealt with rural clients. Jennifer now deals with commercial property matters. 

Outside of the office Jennifer is a keen runner having completed a number marathons and half marathons and completed the London marathon in 2015, followed by the Paris Marathon in 2016.

Stewart joined the firm as a trainee in 2010, qualifying as a solicitor in 2012.  He has since progressed through the ranks and is now an Associate Solicitor in the firm’s Trusts Tax & Care Unit.

Stewart works on a broad range of private client matters for individuals and families:

  • Preparing Wills and Powers of Attorney, ranging from the very basic to the greatly complex;
  • Advising on succession and tax planning issues, including planning for “legal rights” situations, providing for disabled beneficiaries and mitigating liabilities for inheritance tax and capital gains tax;

Following completion of her Honours Degree and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Aberdeen Erin undertook her traineeship with Blackadders, qualifying in January 2016.

Erin is a Solicitor in our Dispute Resolution team, having focussed on contentious matters for a large part of her traineeship. Erin continues to focus on all aspects of litigation with a particular emphasis on property litigation and debt recovery. She has a particular interest in insolvency and is routinely instructed by Insolvency Practitioners in contentious insolvency matters.

Erin has considerable experience of representing clients in a variety of court matters in courts across Scotland. She has a varied client base including SMEs, property agents, Insolvency Practitioners and private individuals.

  • Obtaining an Interim Moratorium on behalf of the directors of a company pending consideration of their proposed Company Voluntary Arrangement;

Alastair obtained his Honours Degree in Law and subsequently completed his Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Aberdeen. Stuart has spent more than 10 years working in Edinburgh in one of the largest commercial property teams in the country, as well as for a renowned private client firm dealing with their commercial property requirements. He has extensive experience in all aspects of commercial and residential property, including investment acquisitions and disposals, and landlord and tenant work.

Stuart has advised on the Scottish aspects of cross-border portfolio projects, and has wide experience in property finance matters, acting for lenders and institutional investors in secured lending transactions. He has acted for, amongst others, UK and international companies, financial institutions, private individuals and on behalf of personal pension schemes. He acts for both landlords and tenants in retail, office and other lettings.

Biography

Marjory was educated at the High School of Dundee and graduated from Edinburgh University in 1971. Thereafter she completed her traineeship and worked in Edinburgh until 1978 where she then returned home to Arbroath and became a partner with a highly respected law firm.  

Marjory subsequently set up her own practice in 2000 – Marjory MacDonald, Solicitors – based in Arbroath. A traditional Chamber Practice, the busy firm grew over the years staffing 9 people, including the firm’s successful Estate Agency arm, “The No.1 Ladies Estate Agency”.  The firm dealt with private client work of Wills, Trusts and Executries alongside residential property work and Property Law in general . Marjory joined Blackadders after the two firms merged in May 2015.

Marjory is a former lecturer in the Law Diploma at Dundee University tutoring students in areas of Wills, Trusts and Executries & Professional Ethics. She is an active Elder in Arbirlot Parish Church and a supporter of several local initiatives including the Arbroath & Montrose District Scout Association, Arbroath Town Mission and the Arbroath Music Festival.

Marjory values building personal relationships with her clients and works in the firms’ residential conveyancing and private client departments, drawing on her 40 years of experience in these areas.

Joanne is an Associate Solicitor in the Family Team in Aberdeen. Born and educated in Aberdeen, Joanne obtained an Honours degree in Law from the University of Aberdeen in 2005 and completed her Diploma in Legal Practice in 2006.

Having practised Family Law almost exclusively throughout her career, Joanne is an experienced family lawyer and can advise on a wide variety of Family Law matters including financial issues on divorce and separation, cohabitee claims and issues involving children. She gets a strong sense of satisfaction from helping clients through what is often a difficult and emotionally challenging time for them. She has demonstrated a diligent and thorough approach when representing those in need of a family lawyer and is known for her straightforward, down to earth and sensible manner.

Joanne appears regularly in Aberdeen Sheriff Court and has also appeared in number of courts throughout the North East of Scotland. She has also acted as the instructing solicitor in cases brought at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, Scotland’s supreme court.

As much as Joanne enjoys appearing in court, her preference is always to resolves disputes by negotiation wherever possible thus avoiding the acrimony, uncertainty and additional expense which litigation inevitably brings. 

Joanne has served her clients’ interests to her utmost throughout her career and is held in high regard by fellow legal professionals in Aberdeen.  She works closely with Gareth Masson and is a valued member of the firm’s Family Law Team.

Biography

Claire is an Associate Solicitor in our Private Client Division.  Born and educated in Dundee, Claire graduated from the University of Dundee with a first class honours degree in law and she was also named as the best student following her successful completion of the Diploma in Legal Practice in 2002.

A skilled legal practitioner, Claire joined Blackadders in October 2015 and she provides tailored advice to her clients on a range of Private Client related aspects including Wills, Powers of Attorney and the administration of Executry estates.  Her calm and sensitive approach to these matters can be relied upon by individual clients and their families and Claire takes enormous pride in nurturing and maintaining a lasting relationship with all of her clients.

Biography

Louise is a senior solicitor in our Private Client division and joined Blackadders in 2015 after just over 8 years working in private client at another Edinburgh law firm. 

Louise is an experienced private client practitioner and can assist with the preparation of wills, powers of attorney, the administration of estates and planning for asset protection and inheritance tax purposes.  Louise is also experienced in the law relating to trusts and can advise on the establishment of trusts and their ongoing administration, including the tax treatment of trust funds and planning to minimise tax.

Biography

Dale is the Director of Private Client Services at Blackadders.  He has 20 years of experience in Private Client work, and specialises in executry and trust matters, having dealt with many complex cases over the years, including estates with a foreign element work, and those with complex tax issues to be addressed. 

For the individual, he specialises in wills and tax planning.  Dale is also qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales, and can therefore advise clients with cross-border issues.

As Director of Private Client Services, he draws on his vast experience to streamline the administration of trusts and executry estates.

Dale initially studied Mathematics at the University of Aberdeen before undertaking an MSc in Operational Research at the University of Sussex. He was an operational research analyst in London with the British Rail Policy Unit and APACS (UK bank clearing system), before taking up a career in law, returning to Aberdeen to complete the Diploma in Legal Practice, since when he has specialised in Private Client work.

Dale has been a tutor on the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Edinburgh since 2002, and is now in his sixth year as  Senior Tutor, planning and directing the Private Client course.   He is also the external examiner for the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, Private Client course, at the University of Dundee.

Biography

Sienna Sproson obtained her law degree and Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Edinburgh.

Sienna joined Blackadders in 2010 as a trainee solicitor. She gained experience in the Commercial Property, Commercial Litigation, Private Client and Conveyancing departments of the firm before qualifying and working in the Residential Conveyancing department for two years. Sienna is now in a Private Client solicitor dealing with Executries, Wills and Powers of Attorney.

Biography

Samantha started her legal career in 2000 initially as a paralegal. After studying at Abertay University and the University of Dundee, she was admitted as a solicitor in 2006. Samantha has 15 years experience working in the areas of executries, administration of trusts, wills, powers of attorney and all aspects of residential conveyancing. She joined Blackadders in October 2015 and will be dealing predominantly with executries in the private client department.

Joanne joined Blackadders in 2015 as a senior solicitor in our Private Client department and deals with Executries, Wills and Powers of Attorney. Since qualifying as a solicitor in 2011, Joanne has gained valuable experience in many aspects of Private Client work, including the administration of estates, the setting up and administering of trusts, inheritance tax and lifetime planning work, the preparation of Wills and Powers of Attorney and the administration of Guardianships. Biography

Ruth Weir works as a solicitor within our Corporate and Commercial team.

Ruth has a background of working in-house for a multi-million pound sporting organisation, advising on a wide range of commercial contracts, brand protection issues and data protection matters.  She advises clients on commercial issues and general corporate matters, with particular experience of broadcast agreements, software licenses and intellectual property issues.  Ruth also assists with the provision of company secretarial services.

Biography

Kirsty joined Blackadders in October 2015 and works in the firms' busy residential conveyancing department.

Kirsty graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2007 and 2008, having gained LLB(Hons) and thereafter a Diploma in Legal Practice.  After completing her Traineeship in Ayrshire, Kirsty qualified as a solicitor in 2010.  She has experience in residential conveyancing, private client and civil court work.  In recent years Kirsty has moved her focus on to residential property and private client work. 

As well as carrying out all aspects of Residential Property work, Kirsty also has vast experience in private client matters, particularly in relation to wills.

Sarah is an Associate Solicitor in Blackadders' Business team.  Sarah advises on corporate, commercial and employment matters and works with various sectors with a special interest in charities.  Sarah and her team advise clients from not for profit organisations and privately-held companies to major PLCs and large corporations with global operations.  Sarah was recently seconded to OSRC, the Scottish Charities Regulator, gaining invaluable experience and specialist knowledge of regulatory work.  

Sarah recently returned from a position with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator, where she gained a valuable understanding of OSCR's regulatory approach.  Sarah can assist charities or those thinking about setting up a charity from set up to dissolution.
